RecoveredCash LLC ("RecoveredCash," "we," "us," or "our") operates RecoveredCash.com to help individuals locate and recover unclaimed property held by the California State Controller's Office. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your personal information when you use our website and services.

By using RecoveredCash.com, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.

Your right to claim for free: Before using our paid service, please know that you have the right to search for and claim unclaimed property directly from the California State Controller's Office at no cost. We are an independent service, not affiliated with any government agency.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide directly

  • Account information: Full legal name, email address, phone number, and password when you create an account.
  • Identity verification documents: Government-issued photo ID, Social Security card or ITIN documentation, and proof of address uploaded to support your claim.
  • Mailing address: Current residential address used for claim correspondence.
  • Last 4 digits of SSN: Collected during signup for identity verification. We do not store your full Social Security Number.
  • Communications: Messages, questions, or feedback you send us.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage data: Pages visited, features used, search queries entered, and time spent on the site.
  • Device and browser information: IP address, browser type, operating system, and referring URL.
  • Cookies: Session cookies to keep you logged in, and analytics cookies to understand how our service is used. You may disable cookies in your browser settings, though some features may not function correctly.

Information from public records

We obtain property owner information — including names and last known addresses — from public California unclaimed property records. This information is used to identify potential matches and contact property owners about unclaimed funds.

2. How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Verify your identity and match you to unclaimed property records
  • Prepare, submit, and track claims with the California State Controller's Office
  • Communicate with you about your claim status and required next steps
  • Send transactional emails (claim updates, document requests, payment confirmations)
  • Comply with legal obligations, including state finder's fee regulations and anti-money laundering requirements
  • Improve our service and troubleshoot technical issues
  • Detect and prevent fraud or unauthorized access

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your information for advertising purposes.

3. Sharing your information

We share your information only in the following circumstances:

State treasury agencies

For California claims, we submit your identity documents, signed fee agreement, signed claim form, and supporting documentation to the California State Controller's Office as required to process your claim. This is the core purpose of our service and is authorized by your signed agreement and claim documents.

Service providers

We work with trusted third-party vendors who process data on our behalf under confidentiality agreements:

  • Supabase — secure database and document storage
  • SignWell — electronic signature of fee agreements
  • Resend — transactional email delivery
  • BatchData — skip tracing to locate current contact information from public records

Legal requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law, subpoena, court order, or government request, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of RecoveredCash, our users, or the public.

Business transfers

If RecoveredCash is acquired, merged, or undergoes a change of ownership, your information may be transferred to the acquiring entity, subject to the same privacy protections described in this policy.

4. Data retention

We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy, including:

  • Active account data is retained while your account is open.
  • Claim records and supporting documents are retained for a minimum of 7 years after claim resolution, as required for tax and regulatory compliance.
  • Signed fee agreements and claim documents are retained for the period required by applicable law.
  • You may request deletion of your account and personal data at any time (see Your Rights below). Note that we may retain certain information where required by law or legitimate business need, such as completed claim records.

5. Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:

  • All data is encrypted in transit using TLS/HTTPS.
  • Documents are stored encrypted at rest in Supabase with Row-Level Security policies that restrict access to your own data.
  • Access to production systems is limited to authorized personnel only.

No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. While we take reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at hello@recoveredcash.com.

6. Your rights

You have the following rights with respect to your personal information:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction: Request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your personal information, subject to legal retention requirements.
  • Portability: Request your data in a portable format.
  • Opt-out: Unsubscribe from marketing communications at any time using the link in any email or by contacting us directly. Note: transactional emails related to active claims cannot be opted out of.

If you are a California resident, you may have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). We do not sell personal information and do not discriminate against users who exercise their privacy rights.

7. Children's privacy

Our services are intended for individuals 18 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 18, we will delete it promptly. If you believe we have collected such information, contact us at hello@recoveredcash.com.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of our services after the effective date of the revised policy constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
